The story of Gavipura, director Kumar’s latest movie, is inspired by a real life incident.
Kumar has in fact told his own story through the movie and he has cast new faces. The director believes the story will strike an instant connection with the people, especially the youngsters. He has woven it around the theme of love and how the caste system plays havoc in all of that. The film traces the life of two youngsters who fall in love. They belong to two different castes. Surprisingly, the parents agree but the boy’s uncle destroys their relationship just because the girl belongs to a different caste.
“Caste system in deep-rooted in our society. I know that it’s impossible to change people’s perception about caste system but if this movie helps in sending a positive message across to the people, I would be happy,” said Kumar.
The movie has been shot in and round Gavipura, near Hanumanthanagar in the City. “I have attempted to tell my story through the movie. I was devastated when I fell out of love. There was stiff opposition from my parents. This incident changed my life. There’s so much damage caste does in our society. Right from fuelling communal riots to destroying relationships,” explained Kumar.
Coming from a family of film-makers, it was no surprise when Suraj decided to debut in Kumar’s film. “Caste system is an integral part of society. But if the youngsters try to break free from the shackles of caste or at least make a start in that direction, I am sure people will begin to see reason,” Suraj pointed out.
Suraj is impressed with the storyline and thinks the subject is relevant today, “A lot of relationships don’t work because of differences in caste. The obsession with upper and lower castes is an indispensable part of the marriage market,” he reasoned. He hopes the movie would do well with the people.
Soujanya, still a student and the heroine of the film said that she never thought of a career in the film industry. “Director Kumar came to our college for one of the events and he thought I fit perfectly into the character he had in mind. This is my first film and there’s a lot of hard work from my end,” said Soujanya. She says the guidance and help she gets from the director is indeed invaluable.
