Obtaining and producing false caste certificate or income-cum-caste certificate will soon attract punishment with rigorous imprisonment (RI) for a term of six months to two years.
Tahsildars found guilty of issuing such certificates will also be punished under the same penal provisions.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar on Tuesday, tabled an amendment bill in the Legislative Assembly that allows for imposing penalties to curtail the use of false certificate, that has grown into a menace.
The Karnataka Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (Reservation of Appointment etc) Amendment Bill, 2011, also provides for cancellation of a degree acquired by a person who has secured admission to an educational institution on the basis of a false caste certificate or income certificate.
According to new provisions in the Bill, a person who obtains caste certificate or income-cum-caste certificate by furnishing false information or any other fraudulent means, shall on conviction be punishable with rigorous imprisonment for a term of six months to two years.
Tahsildars who intentionally issue a false caste certificate will also face the penalty of six months to two years rigorous imprisonment and fine up to Rs 5,000 on conviction.
