Caste News:Dividing people on caste basis is a tragedy: Nanaiah

‘Our constitution has no mention on caste system, it speaks only of equality’
“Dividing people on the basis of caste is a tragedy, said MLC M C Nanaiah.
Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah speaking after inaugurating D Devraj Urs Bhavan in Madikeri on Friday. dh photoSpeaking at the inauguration of D Devraj Urs Bhavan in Madikeri on Friday, he said “even after 63 years of independence, we identify a person based on his caste. Through caste system, reservation is provided in social, educational and political field, which is a tragedy of our country.”

“Our Constitution does not make any mention on caste system. However, it has pointed out on equality and economic backwardness. Unfortunately, the society and the nation is divided on the basis of caste. From government job to MLA or Ministership, the reservation is provided on the basis of caste. It was late D Devaraj Urs who fought against caste system,” Nanaiah said.

“Between 1972 to 78, there was social revolution in the country. Till 1972, 15 per cent of economically and socially backward MLAs could not enter the portals of Vidhan Soudha. Till then Assembly and Council were restricted to few community alone. However, with the revolution created by Urs, for the first time 106 MLAs out of  224 Assembly members were elected from backward community in 1972,” he explained.

With the Land Reforms Act, Urs implemented the policy of tillers being the  owners of the land. Installing the statues of important persons on the basis of caste around Vidhan Soudha should be abolished. The surroundings of Vidhan Soudha should not be made as burial ground. The unification of the country is not possible as long as the caste system is not abolished. The teaching and values of Urs should become model for all of us, he added.

He said “Urs was a simple and straight forward person. However, those who could not digest his popularity levelled corruption charges against him. Unfortunately, when he died, there was not even one paise in his bank account.
He did not even own a house in Bangalore. Unfortunately, today, more than 60,000 acre land is in the hands of politicians, middlemen in and around Bangalore,” Nanaiah lamented.

“I was opposed to the construction of Suvarna Samskruthika Samucchaya in the maidan of Junior College. Even in the future, no concrete buildings should be constructed in the school and college grounds,” he appealed.

Zilla Panchayat President V M Vijaya said “there was shortage of Rs 20 lakh for the completion of D Devraj Urs Bhavan. It was Deergakeshi Shivanna who released Rs 10 lakh towards the completion during her tenure. Later, during my tenure a sum of Rs 13 lakh was released.”

Deputy Commissioner K H Ashwathanarayana Gowda, ZP Vice President Anitha Kanjithanda, CMC President P D Ponnappa, ZP Standing Committee on Social Justice President S N Rajarao and others were present.

Rs 25 crore for road

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has assured to release additional Rs 25 crore for the development of roads in Kodagu district, said MLA M P Appacchuranjan.

Speaking at the inauguration of D Devraj Urs Bhavan, he said the roads will be developed as all weather roads. All elected representatives should work unitedly keeping aside their political difference with regard to the development of road.

The land has been identified near Sudarshan guest house for the Suvarna Samskurthika Samucchaya and the work will commence soon.

Difference between Caste & Tribe

‘tribal organisation’ and ‘Hindu organisation’. technology of production. Tribal technology is believed to be inferior.  By contrast, the caste system has a superior technological apparatus and a system of occupational specialisation and inter-dependence castes are primarily associated with the agricultural mode of production While caste society is considered to be surplus producing, tribes are essentially subsistence economies, in which whatever is produced is for the purpose of consumption. From this, we may infer that if a caste society is ‘future-oriented’, a tribe is rooted in its ‘present’. Against this background, whenever the tribes had difficult economic periods, they entered the portals of caste society, taking up an occupation and supplying its product to non-tribal groups, thus entering into what has been called in north India, the jajmanî system (the system of patron-client relations). If it was im...

Indians’ caste fixation:Sunanda K Datta Ray

By Sunanda K Datta-Ray Thinking aloud For most Indians caste is an essential part of identity, not something to be proud or ashamed of, just something that is. Singaporean leaders like Lee Kuan Yew and foreign minister George Yeo worry that new settlers from India are introducing caste distinctions to Indians who have been settled on the island for nearly 200 years. But Indians know that Singapore seemed tranquil mainly because there wasn’t enough caste variety to cause friction. While you can take an Indian out of his country, you can’t so easily take him out of his caste. Even the pious ‘caste no bar’ insertion by many non-resident Indians tacitly affirms the importance of caste. Bal Thackeray was only stating the truth when he told an interviewer, “In India, people don’t cast their vote, they vote their caste.” Ideology and modernism may shape the thinking of the urban elite that benefited from Macaulay’s Minute on education, but they are a dwindling minority. For most Indi...
